Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL)

Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) on new development is to provide infrastructure that supports the development of the area

Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) on new development is to provide infrastructure that supports the development of the area.   The following types of development are liable to pay CIL in Teignbridge:

  • Market Housing (not affordable housing);>
  • Retail development (outside town centre shopping areas of Newton Abbot, Teignmouth, Dawlish, Bovey and Chudleigh);
  • Net increase of floorspace for conversions (change of use) of existing buildings to retail or residential uses.

Self build housing, residential annexes and extensions can all receive exemption providing they apply correctly and prior to commencement of development.

The Parish Council receives 15% of CIL income within its area.  Local councils can spend their CIL on the provision, improvement, replacement, operation or maintenance of infrastructure; or anything else that is concerned with addressing the demands that development places on an area.

Local councils have a legal duty to prepare an annual report of CIL received and spent in any financial year and publish it on their website.
